New e-book Auto Erotica dives into the thrilling world of automotive brochures

Jonny Trunk has been sifting through his past for the past three decades. His record company Trunk Records specializes in esoteric, weird, and lost music, and his passion for historical graphic design and packaging has led him to publish books on everything from Sainsbury's own label archives to cute 20th century packaging.

However, it was the often overlooked art form of car brochure design that first sparked Trunk's interest in collecting ephemera as a young boy growing up in the 1970s.

“I used to harass all the local garages, go to auto shows and write off to car companies to get more brochures. I would even stand on the side of a busy road for hours looking for rare cars – known as "auto-spotting," "he says.

While Trunks' fascination with auto brochures waned as more conventional teenage interests took hold, he recently returned to his first love when he was just buying a vintage car.

"I realized that I still remembered the name of every old car I would see. Not just the name, but also the engine size and model looked back on the old car brochures," he says.

“At the same time, I was looking for a new book to follow up on the Own Label Sainsbury and Wrappers Delight book I made with Fuel. The follow-up book had to be an area of graphics and design that hadn't actually been cataloged. I realized that my auto brochure collection (which was starting to grow again) was the way forward, ”adds Trunk.

Launched on Kickstarter last month, Auto Erotica takes readers on a grand tour of the history of British auto brochures – from a poster for the three-wheeled Bond Bug to a particularly fascinating movie book for the Ford Cortina Mark III.

The book is also said to be a time capsule for some of the stranger and more wonderful graphic ideas from the period, as evidenced by the foreword by former car brochure collector, pop star, writer and cultural commentator Bob Stanley.

"The brochures I made between the 1960s and 1980s have exceptionally forgotten graphics, photography, and brilliant creative ideas," says Trunk. "They give the reader an extraordinary nostalgic journey through time."

Auto Erotica is expected to ship in April 2021. trunkrecords.com
